So on the journey to becoming more aware of what goes into my body, I’ve also started to become more aware of what goes ON it. And I don’t even want to get into what goes near it because it will make my head explode.
It’s pretty scary once you sit down and think about all of the products that touch your skin on almost a daily basis. The long list includes: make-up, lotion, deodorant, perfume, soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, dry shampoo, nail polish, hair spray, face wash, serums, etc., etc., etc.
While I’m not perfect and definitely prefer my Not Your Mother’s dry shampoo over baking soda/powder, I try to do the best I can.
I still love my Chanel perfume for date nights and special occasions but I try and stick to my essential oils for the every day living.
I’ve tried to go the safer route with shampoo and conditioner but it left my hair SO oily so if you have any great recommendations for this, holla.
I’ve definitely gone for the better lotions/face washes/soaps out there and am pretty happy with them.
I’ve made the switch to the salt crystal for deodorant. Also love me some PiperWai 🙂
And now, I have converted my nail polishes and am slowly trying to change up the make up products (again, holla with any great recs).
I am OBSESSED with the Sundays Studio polish line. They are 10-Free (!!!) polishes and they offer a huge variety of colors! While slightly pricey at $18 a bottle, I still think it’s worth making the switch. And I figure they will last awhile, making it even more worth it.
So, what is 10-free and why is that important? Nail polishes are FULL of nasty, harmful chemicals and they sit on your nails for days and days. You are absorbing all of these chemicals into your body and it is so YUCK.
What a typical nail polish includes:
Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP): an toxic ingredient used in plastics to make them more flexible and could potentially cause harm to developmental growth and reproduction
Formaldehyde: we all know this is a carcinogen
Toluene: HIGHLY hazardous chemical that becomes toxic to our bodies with prolonged exposure
Camphor: turns your nails yellow and dries them out (I had to take a two month break from any polish in order to get my nails back to normal because of this. TWO MONTHS)
^^^A whole lotta yuck up there. I actually had an issue after I got my nails done before my wedding. One of my large toenails basically stopped growing. I basically freaked out and thought I was dying (hypochondriac over here) but once I came back to reality, I decided I was going to take off any and all nail polish for awhile. My nails were SO gross and dried out because I constantly have nasty ass polish on them. I was pretty embarrassed to even walk around in sandals because my nails were so effed. That’s when a fellow blogger friend, Erin Nicole of The Blonde Latte, posted about Sundays Studio‘s 10-free polish. I instantly purchased and tried it out and I love it! I cannot wait to collect more colors. And when I do go get my manis and pedis, I will be bringing along my own 10-free polish:)
Another product I have recently tried out is the lipstick line by Delaney Bella Naturals. This new line is close to my heart because my 15-year old cousin, Delaney, is the owner. Can you believe that?! She’s only 15! She’s been passionate about makeup and beauty her entire life and has wanted to make the beauty world a safer place for all of us. I purchased Luvie and Boys and Berries and I LOVE THEM! They go on glossy but dry matte and stay well! They also feel amazing on your lips because they lock in the moisture.
And let me be real here, I don’t just love them because of who she is. I actually purchased them, tried them out a few times and came to the conclusions on my own. If I wasn’t into it, I would not be posting it.
Part of the proceeds from Delaney’s line will also go to the charity, Save A Smile. It’s so amazing to see this young bossbabe chase her dreams and help people along the way. I am so excited to see what comes next for this line!
